Indian actor, producer, host, occasional playback vocalist, and former politician Amitabh Bachchan is well recognized for his work in Hindi cinema. He is recognized as one of the most popular and significant performers in Indian film history.

Bachchan was born in Allahabad in 1942 to social activist Teji Bachchan and Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. He received his education at Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, and Sherwood College, Nainital.
As a voice narrator in Mrinal Sen’s movie Bhuvan Shome, he launched his film career in 1969. Two of his movies, the action drama Shootout at Lokhandwala with a star-studded cast and the romance comedy Cheeni Kum, were released in May 2007. Cheeni Kum perked up after a sluggish start and was a success, whereas Shootout at Lokhandwala improved at the box office and was deemed a success in India.
In addition to receiving negative reviews from critics, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, a remake of his biggest blockbuster Sholay (1975), was released in August of the same year. In the same year, Bachchan made his debut in Rituparno Ghosh’s The Last Lear, a movie that also starred Arjun Rampal, Preity Zinta, and was subtitled in English. On September 9, 2007, the movie had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
